The following class descriptions are for the 2024 Fall Schedule which is subject to change.

Rec 1 (Thursdays)

This class is for new dancers ages 5+ to learn basics of Highland dancing and for recreational dancers to advance their skills. Strength, stamina, coordination, and grace are some of the many skills dancers will practice in this class, along with learning some Scottish culture and history. The Hop Scotch Polka, Pas de Basques & High Cuts, Fling, Sword, and Lilt are the main dances focused on in this class, along with special choreographies. Dancers will also get to participate in games and activities to encourage confidence and friendships with the other dancers.

Comp A (Thursdays)

This class is for competitive dancers in the Beginner competition level to practice their technique in the five Beginner dances (Fling, Sword, Seann Triubhas, Lilt, Flora). Dancers will fine tune their turnout, point, strength, grace, flexibility, and more in an encouraging and focused environment. Double high cuts, balances, entrechats, and other tricky movements will also be practiced occasionally. Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend both Comp A classes each week, as the classes are meant to work in conjunction with each other.

Comp B (Thursdays)

This class is for competitive dancers in the Novice competition level or above to improve and perfect their technique. Once dancers have passed the Beginner competition level, they are held to a much higher technical standard and must work hard to achieve the results they want. Turnout exercises, ankle strengthening, core stability, and flexibility are some of the things dancers can expect to practice in this class. Dancers will also work to improve their split high cuts, triple shakes, and similar higher-level movements. Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend both Comp B classes each week, as the classes are meant to work in conjunction with each other.

Comp A&B (Tuesdays)

This class is for all dancers on the competition team who are not working towards championship dances/competitions. The class will focused on learning and perfecting full dances, stamina, and especially memorization. Dances practiced include the Fling, Sword, Seann Triubhas, Lilt, Flora, Strathspey, Johnny, Jig, and occasionally the Laddie, Village Maid, and special choreographies. Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend either the Comp A or B class along with this one, as the classes are meant to work in conjunction with each other.

Championship (Tuesdays)

The highest-level class at Lake City Highland Dance - the Championship class. This class is by invite only and is for Intermediate and Premier dancers who are working towards championship competitions including the Regional and National championships, the BATD Scholarships, or a Highland dance teaching certification. Dancers will memorize the new championship and premiership steps each year and are expected to be practicing on their own regularly. Though the dancers in the class regularly compete against each other, they are a friendly and close-knit group and this class has no shortage of fun and excitement.
